leo the deacon (diyakoz leon), iyonya kaloe'de doğmuş bizanslı tarihçi ve vakanüvis. tarihi tamamen kendi gözlemleri ile aktarmaya özen göstermiştir (triaditza kuşatması, antakya ve kuzey suriye bölgesinin fethi, bulgar savaşı vs.) fakat çok sık basit kelimeleri bile unutulmuş eş anlamları ile yazdığı için bu tavrı bilge görünme çabası olarak adlandırılmış ve değersizleştirilmiştir. oysa leo the deacon ne kadar değersizleştirilmiş ve sıkıcı bulunmuş olsa bile döneminin önemli otoritelerinden biri olduğu unutulmamalı. konstantinopolis'te imparatorluk tarihi yazmaya başlamış fakat bitiremeden ölmüştür.
