thomas paine tarafından 1794 yılında kaleme alınmış ve dilimize akıl çağı olarak çevrilmiş eser. deizm'in kutsal kitabı demek yerinde olacaktır bu eser için çünkü paine deyim yerindeyse var olan tüm dinleri yerden yere vurmuş ve hepsini insan işi olmakla suçlamıştır. kutsal kitaplarda geçen vahşetin, müstehcen hikayelerin ve intikam yeminlerinin, yüce bir tanrı değil ancak bir şeytanın elinden çıkabileceğini savunmuş ve onların tanrı tarafından gönderildiğini reddetmiştir. herhangi bir dinin herhangi bir kilisesine bağlılık göstermeyeceğini çünkü ihtiyacı olan tek dinin aklı olduğunu savunmuştur. the age of reason yayımlandığı andan itibaren tartışmalı bir eser olarak anıldı, uzun yıllar sansüre uğradı ve paine'in 'ateist' olarak damgalanmasına sebep oldu.
