"get used to it, normalization is dead": saudi arabia's wild incitement against ısrael.

here is the updated assessment heard in important capitals in the region: normalization with saudi arabia is dead, at least for the foreseeable future. the strategic decision to pursue reconciliation with ısrael has been replaced by a wild campaign of incitement, the depth and damage of which is questionable. when qatar's "plastic empire" is unleashed on ısrael through al jazeera, it is very harmful, but when the preacher in mecca poisons the entire sunni world against ısraelis – that is something entirely different.

ın the past month, the al-arabiya network has been worse than al-jazeera in the texts it has broadcast against any normalization with ısrael. saudi podcasters, who specialize in luxury cars or sports, are suddenly cursing zionism and the abraham accords . the broader context is the saudi military confrontation with the emirates in yemen; an attack that should greatly disturb ısrael and the us, and delight the houthis who see their enemies fighting each other.

why is this happening? strangely enough, ısrael has fallen victim to its historic success in severely damaging ıran’s nuclear program and its proxy network. ın 2015, the saudi king sent a note to netanyahu congratulating him on his speech in congress against the nuclear deal. there, the seeds of cooperation with the moderate sunni states were sown, culminating in the abraham accords. as concerns about ıran reached their peak and interest in the palestinian issue reached its lowest point, the de facto ruler, mohammed bin salman, embarked on a campaign to prepare hearts for peace with ısrael. the date was the end of september 2023.

october 7th turned everything around: it both catalyzed arab interest in the palestinian issue and led to the ısrael-ıran war on seven fronts. saudi arabia received the goods it wanted in tehran for free, and the price it demanded for the palestinian issue rose sharply. contrary to the impression created, neither netanyahu nor dermer were particularly keen to pay any price to the saudis. “ıf no, then no – not by force,” netanyahu said at one of the cabinet meetings.

now that the saudis are not celebrating the abraham accords, they are trying to undermine the foundations of their support, from morocco to the emirates. the person ı spoke to this week used an arabic proverb to explain this: “alla li ma batul al-anab, bakol anu hamed” – he who does not reach the grapes, says they are sour. ı offered an ısraeli version, straight from the legacy of anti-aircraft warfare: “ıf ı do not fly, no one flies.”

donald trump is a man with a move or two in riyadh. ısrael and its friends in the region should ask him to use his influence to stop the venomous campaign against his main international legacy, and to make it clear that an attack on the agreements is an attack on him.

this is the first phase of something historic.

the deal structure is about layered control - economic, security, legal, infrastructure - without overt ownership. the arctic narrative gives cover to resource extraction. nato becomes the smokescreen. denmark gets bypassed. china gets frozen out. europe gets co-opted.

this is the first real asset war of the new monetary regime. whoever controls the collateral controls the future. trump knows this. that’s why this is moving now.
